Riot police fired tear gas to separate clashing protesters in the port city of Alexandria in northern Egypt on Friday. The violence comes on the eve of the second round of voting on a controversial draft constitution.

Dozens of people have been killed in the latest violence between two rival communities in Kenya's coastal region. The clashes have heightened security concerns ahead of next year's elections.

NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen has accused Syria of using Scud-type missiles in "desperation" to halt rebel attacks. UN officials warn that Syrian minorities are increasingly at risk of reprisal attacks by rebels.

S&P downgrades indebted Cyprus on default fears
Struggling eurozone member Cyprus has been ranked two notches lower at CCC+ near junk status by the rating agency Standard and Poors. Germany says it can help - but only if Nicosia adopts a "real" austerity budget.

Vattenfall seeks recompense for German nuclear phaseout
Swedish energy group Vattenfall is reportedly reclaiming losses resulting from the German government's decision last year to shut down older nuclear reactors. The claim is reportedly backed by the Swedish government.

Germans are heading into 2013 less confident about the economy, but with hopes for rising incomes. The GfK research group's consumer climate index also suggests that they might be spending less.
