Do It Today

Susan Patton raised more than a few eyebrows last week when she penned an open letter to the young women of Princeton University urging them to get engaged while they're still in school—and preferably to her son. While Patton may have said it inelegantly, she's basically right. It's hard enough to find the right person. Why not take advantage of a campus full of single people with the same interests? Get married as early as possible, writes The Daily Beast's Megan McArdle.

Weapons

Cheers filled the United Nations assembly chamber as the votes were tallied for the first-ever treaty to regulate the global trade in conventional weapons, which include tanks, helicopters, and guns. The treaty passed in a landslide vote, with only Syria, Iran, and North Korea voting against it and 23 countries abstaining. Also criticizing the treaty was the National Rifle Association, which is threatening to block ratification in the Senate. The treaty would bring more transparency to global arms sales and require states selling weapons to vet countries for human-rights abuses, terrorism, and organized crime.

Looking Up

Texas predicts an $8.8 billion surplus? With revenue rising more rapidly than spending, deficits are evaporating in state capitals—and governors are having fun again, reports The Daily Beast's Daniel Gross.

Evolving

Rob Portman has company. Illinois's Mark Kirk became the second Republican senator to publicly endorse gay marriage, saying that a recent stroke changed his views. "Our time on this earth is limited, I know that better than most," Kirk wrote in a statement. "Life comes down to who you love and who loves you back—government has no place in the middle." Kirk has a moderate record, including recent support for gun control.

MOVING ON

An assistant district attorney who successfully prosecuted an Aryan Brotherhood case was appointed interim D.A. in Kaufman, Texas, on Monday in the wake of the murder of Mike McLelland, who was shot and killed along with his wife in their home on Saturday. Gov. Rick Perry will appoint McLelland's successor. Investigators have turned their attention to the Aryan Brotherhood in the McLellands' deaths, especially since the gang controls the methamphetamine trade in Kaufman. But investigators also cautioned against assuming the Aryan Brotherhood's guilt, and others have speculated that the McLellands' could have been killed by Mexican drug cartels. Autopsies on both McLellands were performed Monday, but the results have not yet been released.
