Kaufman County D.A. Mike McLelland said his combat skills and his gun were good enough to keep him alive after a colleague was slain. He was wrong, The Daily Beast's Michael Daly reports from Forney, Texas. Plus, The Daily Beast's Christine Pelisek on the Aryan Brotherhood's chillingly efficient structure and an anonymous writer who was behind bars with members of the gang on why you should fear them.

REALLY?

For a while, it seemed like the Florida senator would do the right thing on immigration. Now it's not so clear. The Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky on what this means for the future of immigration reform.

BUILDUP

Another day, another threat by North Korea. The country announced on Tuesday that it would be restarting a nuclear reactor that has been dormant since 2007, although it's unclear how long it would take to get the reactor going again, since its cooling tower was destroyed. The announcement comes after a speech by Kim Jong-un was published on Sunday, which pulled back from the tough rhetoric of the past few weeks and instead called for nuclear weapons to be used only as a "deterrent." But the restarted nuclear power plant could increase production of plutonium for nuclear weapons, and comes weeks after North Korea completed its third nuclear test in February.

newtown legacy

Three months after 26 people were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, the state is poised to pass what could be the nation's strictest gun control package. After weeks of negotiations, legislators have proposed eligibility certificates for purchasing a rifle, shotgun, or ammunition; require weapon offenders to register with the state; impose background checks for all firearms; and expand the ban of assault weapons (though a proposal from relatives of Sandy Hook victims to ban high-capacity magazines with more than 10 bullets failed). The bill will likely be passed by the state's general assembly on Wednesday. "When you take all the elements and compare it, I think you could judiciously say this is the strongest bill in the nation," says Ron Pinciaro, executive director of Connecticut Against Gun Violence.

TRAGEDY

A fire at an Islamic school in Burma killed 13 boys early Tuesday. Officials blamed the fire on the overheating of a transformer, but some worried it was more complicated—especially as the Buddhist-majority nation has faced a wave of anti-Muslim violence. In March, 43 people died in an outbreak of violence against Muslims, although Yangon, the site of the boys' school, largely escaped the violence. The boys suffocated when the fire broke out in the dormitory, and neighbors and witnesses said the doors to the dorm may have been locked due to security concerns. A funeral has been planned for Tuesday afternoon.
