HOLY WOW

So, it seems there really are gay priests in the upper echelons of the Vatican hierarchy. At least that's what Pope Francis reportedly told a group of Latin American prelates in a private audience June 6. So—what is he going to do about it? The Daily Beast's Barbie Latza Nadeau reports.

GNARLY

American surfer Kelly Slater scored 20 out of 20 possible points in a quarterfinal heat for the Volcom Fiji Pro—only the fourth person in history to do so. The Daily Beast's Mark Lukach on the beautiful spectacle.

ON THE LAM

Edward Snowden is reportedly still in Hong Kong and looking for legal help, according to several local papers. The Oriental Daily News reported that Snowden is seeking the help of human-rights organizations and lawyers in Hong Kong, while the South China Morning Post says he is holed up in a "secret location." The Post spoke to Snowden, who said, "I'm neither traitor nor hero. I'm an American." The paper promises more details about the National Security Agency surveillance program and Snowden's plans. "People who think I made a mistake in picking [Hong Kong] as a location misunderstand my intentions. I am not here to hide from justice, I am here to reveal criminality," Snowden told the Post.

MONSTER

Ariel Castro pleaded not guilty Wednesday to 329 charges including rape, kidnapping, and aggravated murder for the deaths of two unborn children one of the women miscarried after forced starvation and beatings. Castro has been accused of kidnapping three women as teenagers and holding each captive—and fathering a child with one of them—for over a decade before their dramatic rescue last month. Since last week's indictment, more details have emerged about the horrific nature of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight's imprisonment, including restraint in chains and assault for attempted escapes. The former bus driver is being held in lieu of $8 million bail, and prosecutors say they may seek the death penalty.

DÉJÀ VU

When will they learn? Yet another Republican lawmaker has come forward to profess his belief that rape rarely results in pregnancy. "The incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low," said Arizona Rep. Trent Franks during a committee hearing on Wednesday. Franks introduced a bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks and was reacting to an amendment offered by Democrats that would carve out an exception for rape and incest victims. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a Democrat from California, responded to Franks by saying there was no scientific basis for his claim.

When Obama Reads Your Email

It's funny because it's true ... kind of. The new Tumblr 'Obama is Checking Your Email' pokes fun at the internet monitoring issue with pics of POTUS looking at people's laptops and phones. As the pictures show, nothing is quite as important to the president as what's in your inbox.
