JUDGMENT DAY
As Gazans grow optimistic that a new three-day ceasefire will end the war, Human Rights Watch says it gathered evidence that IDF soldiers fired on civilians. They're also looking into a mass execution first reported by Jesse Rosenfeld for The Daily Beast.
BREAKING

An insider attack by an Afghan solider killed a U.S. Army major general and two other coalition troops at a military training academy outside of Kabul on Tuesday. The general has not been named but he is the highest-ranking member of the U.S. military to be killed in Afghanistan during 13 years of war. The U.S. Department of Defense said the assailant is dead. An Afghan defense official said at least three senior ranking coalition officers have been killed. Up to 15 have been wounded.

BACK HOME

The second American infected with Ebola has arrived in Atlanta for treatment at Emory University Hospital. The plane carrying Nancy Writebol first landed at Bangor International Airport in Maine Tuesday for refueling and federal customs inspection before flying to Atlanta. She'll join Ebola-infected colleague Dr. Kent Brantly in the hospital's isolation ward. Both Americans received an experimental serum that appears to be helping them survive the extremely lethal virus, which has a fatality rate as high as 90 percent.

Today in 1945, an atomic bomb destroyed Hiroshima. As the generation that survived the nuclear attacks begins to pass, the grandson of President Truman is working to end the threat of nuclear weapons.
