Cheat Sheet - Ebola Nurses Are Braver Than Soldiers

Read This, Skip That ....

STANDING OVATION

As the hysteria increases after two Dallas nurses contracted Ebola, it is important to note that these women have shown uncommon courage. Michael Daly writes even the troops of the 101st Airborne Division say they're apprehensive about being deployed to Liberia. Meanwhile, health-care workers are fighting on the front lines in America.

SAY WHAT?

Amber Vinson, the second Dallas nurse to contract Ebola, called CDC officials before boarding her flight on Monday because of her high temperature. However, officials say that because her temperature of 99.5 degrees was below the 100.4 reading for a fever, she was told she could board. "The patient was not showing any other symptoms while on board the plane—no vomiting or diarrhea. The only symptom Amber was showing was the fever," CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said. By Tuesday, Vinson was placed in isolation and tests confirmed her diagnosis for Ebola.

LOSES COOL

Florida's contentious race for governor pitting incumbent Republican Rick Scott against Democratic challenger Charlie Crist descended into farce Wednesday over a disagreement about a podium cooling fan at a debate that was supposed to be about issues. The event got off to a bizarre start when only Crist took the stage with the broadcast already live. The moderator announced that Scott would not come out because of a disagreement over the fan at Crist's feet. Scott's campaign reportedly said debate rules allowed for "no electronics on the podium." A panelist then asked Crist if he was in violation of the agreement. The former governor responded by asking whether the debate was going to be about a fan, a comment followed by cries of "follow the rules" from some Republicans in the audience. Scott took the stage some six minutes late, and the candidates resumed the sharp attacks that have characterized the campaign.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

A feminist writer and game critic had to cancel a talk Wednesday because someone threatened to shoot up a school where she was going to speak. Arthur Chu says that anyone who clicks on the #GamerGate hashtag will realize that underneath the anger at women in gaming culture is fear.

Cutting Ties

The United States is ditching the old Free Syrian Army and developing its own local ground force to use in the fight against ISIS, McClatchy reports. The service quotes retired Gen. John Allen, coordinator of the U.S.-led coalition's campaign against the extremist group, telling reporters at the State Department that, "At this point, there is not formal coordination with the FSA." Allen said America's intent is to start from scratch in creating a home-grown, moderate counterweight to ISIS. On Tuesday, there was no representation of Syrian rebel groups at the 21-nation summit about ISIS. For most of the three years of the Syrian conflict, the U.S. ground game hinged on rebel militias loosely affiliated under the banner of the FSA, but that posed problems involving lack of cohesion, uneven fighting skills, and frequent battlefield coordination with the Al-Nusra Front.
