Obama Bracing for Debt-Panel Failure Is anyone surprised? The Washington Post says the Obama administration is quietly preparing for the debt-reduction "supercommittee" to fail, while The Wall Street Journal says the panel is turning to accounting gimmicks to reach the target of $1.2 trillion in savings over 10 years. The deadline for debt talks is Nov. 23 and, so far, there has been no bill language made public or even a hint of a deal. On Tuesday, House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid met, a sign that they are worried about the committee's inaction. NYPD Boosts 'Occupy' Movement New York protesters began returning to Zuccotti Park on Tuesday—but without tents, following a court ruling that upheld part of Mayor Bloomberg's eviction. Has the NYPD just reinvigorated the movement? Thanks to anger over the raid, an anti–Wall Street demonstration planned for Thursday is likely to draw far more people than it would have otherwise. McQueary: I Stopped Sandusky In an email sent on Nov. 8 to a friend, former Penn State coach Mike McQueary reportedly said that he "stopped" Jerry Sandusky's alleged rape of a 10-year-old boy. In the email, sent from McQueary's Penn State account, he writes, "I did not stop it, physically … but made sure it was stopped when I left the locker room." McQueary goes on to say that he "discussed" the situation with the police and the university official in charge of the police. He then says he is getting "hammered" for handling the situation the "right" way and that he was forced to make "tough impacting quick decisions." The email brings into question McQueary's grand-jury testimony, in which he said he did not go to the police and that he did not intervene when he saw the rape. Meanwhile, CBS News conducted a brief interview with McQueary in which he said his emotions are like a snow globe. Bullets Fired at White House The Secret Service discovered two bullets on the White House grounds Tuesday—one of which hit a window and was stopped by ballistic glass. On Friday, witnesses reported hearing gunfire near the White House; they said they saw two speeding cars, and an AK-47 was recovered. Police have issued an arrest warrant for Oscar Ortega-Hernandez related to the incident. Read it at New York Daily News SCANDAL 5. Solyndra: Energy Asked to Delay Layoffs This ought to make for some good political theater when Energy Secretary Steven Chu testifies before the House investigative committee looking into Solyndra loans. According to an Oct. 30, 2010, email from a Solyndra investment adviser, Energy Department officials pushed "very hard" to delay layoffs until after the Nov. 2 election. Solyndra did, in fact, make its layoffs public on Nov. 3, although it is unclear if that was due to government pressure. The White House declined to comment on the specific allegation but said the emails had been "cherry-picked by House Republicans." Read it at The Washington Post Peter J.
