OCTOBER SURPRISE

While Obama crams for his last presidential debate tonight, a whiff of scandal surrounds one of his key reelection advisers. Top White House and campaign officials tell The Daily Beast they were stunned by recent disclosures that presidential confidante Anita Dunn is so active with firms lobbying the administration. "The timing is terrible. I bet it comes up in the debate [Monday] as a question of Obama ethics," says one official. "I think she is well over the line."

IS IT OVER?

Can we move on now? The International Cycling Union decided Monday that it would not appeal the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's decision in the doping case against Lance Armstrong. The cyclist will be stripped of all seven of his Tour de France titles and be slapped with a lifetime ban against competing in Olympic sports. The decision not to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport almost definitely means that the Armstrong case is finally closed. "Lance Armstrong has no place in cycling," International Cycling Union president Pat McQuaid told reporters Monday.

BATTLE OF BOCA

Monday's foreign policy debate comes down to projection, and the man who exudes control amid the chaos building in Iran, Syria, and Israel will be the winner, says Michael Tomasky.

WHO'S THE MAN?

No doubt practicing for tonight's debate, the Obama campaign has released a new ad focused on the president's foreign policy achievements. "A decade of war that cost us dearly," the ad says. "And now for president, a clear choice: President Obama ended the Iraq war. Mitt Romney would have left 30,000 troops there and called bringing them home 'tragic.' Obama's brought 30,000 soldiers back from Afghanistan and has a responsible plan to end the war. Romney calls it Obama's biggest mistake." The ad concludes that it's "time to stop fighting over there and start rebuilding here."

BATTLEGROUND

Will it be enough? President Barack Obama holds a 5-point lead on Mitt Romney in Ohio according to a new Quinnipiac University/CBS News poll. The Obama campaign is waging a defensive ground war in the battleground state, which may prove an Electoral College bulwark against Romney's chances at the White House. But the new numbers are a decline for Obama—while he now leads 50 to 45 percent among likely voters, he held a decidedly stronger lead at the end of September, when he was ahead 53 to 43 percent.

Andrew Romano: Expect Both Candidates to Start Swinging

Despite the brief moment of levity at the Al Smith Dinner, Andrew Romano says that voters should expect Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to go back to fighting as the election comes to a close.
